The public opinion research agency, DeFacto Consultancy, conducted the ninth wave of research on citizens’ attitudes towards European integration and the EU accession process for the Delegation of the European Union to Montenegro.
The Executive Director of DeFacto Consultancy, Stevan Kandić, stated that the research findings showed that three-quarters of citizens, or 75.5%, have a positive attitude towards the European Union, which is nearly 4% higher than in June 2021.
“There has also been an increase in the number of citizens supporting Montenegro’s accession to the European Union, with 74.6% of them in favor. At the same time, the number of citizens strongly supporting EU accession has reached an almost record level of 41.7%,” Kandić noted.
He announced that about three-quarters of respondents believe that Montenegro’s EU membership would bring them more benefits than harm.
“Of those who would participate in a hypothetical referendum on Montenegro’s EU accession, 80.2% would vote in favor of accession,” explained Stevan Kandić, the director of DeFacto agency during the presentation of the research results. One-third of citizens view the European Union as Montenegro’s key partner and the largest foreign donor. “37.2% claim that the EU showed the highest level of solidarity towards Montenegro in the fight against the COVID-19 epidemic,” Kandić said.
On the other hand, more than half (53.6%) of respondents believe that Montenegro is progressing very slowly or not moving fast enough towards the EU, which is 13% higher than at the end of 2020.
The quantitative research on ‘Citizens’ Attitudes towards European Integration and the EU Accession Process’ was conducted from November 19 to December 4, 2021, with a sample of 1,000 citizens and a margin of error of +/-3.1%.
